About us
How it all started
WAnimals was started by two friends who love animals and travelling to natural places to see them in their own habitat. The idea came up on a trip to Malaysia and Borneo, where we went into the jungle to see orangutans, Asian elephants, crocodiles, proboscis monkeys and all the wildlife you can find there. On that same trip we also passed through the Perhentian Islands and Mabul and Sipadan, where we dived for the first time surrounded by a marine biodiversity that left us speechless.
Since then we have carried on diving in other places, such as Thailand and the Canary Islands, and every trip confirmed the same thing: there was no single place bringing together everything we were discovering about species, parks and dive sites, nor an easy way to plan the next trip with that information to hand.
That is how WAnimals was born: we wanted to build a website and an app that would be at once an encyclopedia, a social network and a place to learn about animals — somewhere anyone can look up species, parks and dive sites, plan their own trips, and share them with other travellers and nature lovers like us.
But above all, we want WAnimals to help raise awareness of how important animals and the natural environments they live in are, and of how important it is to look after them, conserve them and keep them going long after our next visit.
