The wildlife of Africa, from savannah to rainforest and from desert to the great lakes.
Africa is home to the greatest diversity of large land mammals on the planet, with species as well known as the African elephant, the giraffe, the lion and the hippopotamus. That wealth is spread across very different ecosystems: the savannahs of the east and south, the rainforests of the Congo Basin, the Sahara and Namib deserts, and the lakes of the Rift Valley with their cichlid fish. Madagascar deserves a chapter of its own: separated from the continent for millions of years, it holds wildlife found nowhere else, such as the lemurs.
