Water bears: microscopic animals of extraordinary resilience.
Tardigrades usually measure less than a millimetre, have eight stubby legs with claws, and live in mosses, lichens, soils and freshwater and marine sediments all over the world. Their fame comes from cryptobiosis: when their surroundings dry out, they can lose almost all the water in their bodies and enter a state of suspended animation in which they withstand extreme temperatures, radiation and even the vacuum of space. Once rehydrated, they resume their activity.
