Mols Bjerge

Mols Bjerge National Park was established in 2009 on the Djursland peninsula, in eastern Jutland, and protects some 180 km² taking in hills, woods, heaths, coast and the historic town of Ebeltoft.

Its relief is the work of ice: during the last glaciation the edge of the ice sheet halted here and left a landscape of push moraines, drift hills and hollows occupied by lakes, one of the best-preserved and most legible glacial complexes in Denmark. The Mols hills, which give the park its name, rise above a hundred metres, a considerable altitude in so flat a country.

The vegetation combines dry heaths, calcareous grasslands rich in orchids, ancient beech and oak woods and a coast of beaches and low cliffs. The territory is thick with prehistoric remains: there are hundreds of Bronze Age burial barrows scattered over the hills, as well as Stone Age and Iron Age sites, which makes the park a cultural landscape as much as a natural one.
