Five of the nine parks for the white-backed woodpecker are World Heritage and five are biosphere reserves: Białowieża and Belovezhskaya Pushcha are the same forest split by the Polish-Belarusian border, and together they add up to 3,000 km². Bieszczady, the Carpathians, Pirin, Tara, Mount Olympus and the Abruzzo complete an arc of European old-growth forest.
