A fissure opened in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian plates, filled with meltwater from the Langjökull glacier that has percolated for decades through porous lava. That natural filtration is what produces visibility comfortably in excess of 80-100 m. The fissure opened in the earthquakes of 1789.

El agua no procede del lago sino del glaciar, y tarda entre 30 y 100 años en llegar. La grieta se ensancha unos 2 cm al año y cambia con cada seísmo: los desprendimientos crean túneles y perfiles nuevos. Conviene matizar un tópico: los guías señalan que el límite exacto entre placas es difuso, no una línea limpia que se pueda tocar con las dos manos.
