Declared in 1935 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1977, the Juan Fernández archipelago — and in particular its main island, officially renamed Robinson Crusoe in 1966 for tourism — is celebrated for having inspired Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719), loosely based on the real marooning of the Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk, who survived alone on the island for more than four years between 1704 and 1709 after falling out with his captain.
