Declared in 1970 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007 as part of Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes, Hallasan protects South Korea's highest peak (1,947 m), an extinct shield volcano with a crater lake at its summit called Baengnokdam, whose name means lake of the white deer, after a Taoist legend of immortals who came down to drink from its waters riding white deer.
