Highlight
Minahasa peninsula rainforest and maleo nesting grounds
Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park covers 2,871 km² on the Minahasa peninsula, in northern Sulawesi, between the provinces of North Sulawesi and Gorontalo. It was established in 1991 and was initially called Dumoga-Bone National Park; it was later renamed in honour of Nani Wartabone, the local resistance leader who drove Japanese troops out of Gorontalo during the Second World War.
The Wildlife Conservation Society has identified it as the single most important site for the conservation of Sulawesi's wildlife. The island is biogeographically unique, east of the Wallace Line, and its fauna evolved in isolation over millions of years. The park holds much of that endemism: the anoa, the babirusa, the spectral tarsier, the crested black macaque and the cuscus. Surveys have recorded 24 mammal species, 11 reptile species and 125 bird species.
Its most emblematic species is the maleo, an endemic megapode that does not incubate its eggs with its body but buries them in sand warmed by the sun or by geothermal activity; the chicks hatch fully developed and able to fly. The park preserves several of the species' most important communal nesting grounds, which are guarded because egg collecting has historically been its main threat. The flora includes threatened species such as Macassar ebony and the matayangan palm.
