Dachigam

Declared in 1981, Dachigam — whose name means ten villages, after the settlements resettled to create the reserve in the early 20th century under the Maharaja of Kashmir — is the last refuge in the world of the hangul, or Kashmir stag, an endemic subspecies whose total wild population barely passes 200 animals, gravely threatened by the territorial conflict and the security instability that have affected the region for decades.
