A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 for its natural and cultural value alike, Huangshan (the Yellow Mountain) has for more than a thousand years been one of the principal inspirations of traditional Chinese landscape painting (shanshui), with its characteristic twisted pines clinging to near-vertical granite walls, often wrapped in a sea of cloud that lifts only partly at dawn. A traditional Chinese saying has it that whoever has seen the Five Great Mountains need see no other mountains, and whoever has seen Huangshan need not see the Five Great Mountains.
