Declared in 1967, Jirisan was South Korea's first national park and remains the largest unbroken mountain massif in the country. Since 2004 it has hosted an ambitious programme to reintroduce the Asiatic black bear, all but hunted out of the Korean peninsula through the 20th century, which has restored a small breeding wild population after two decades of sustained effort.
