Highlight
One of the first community conservation areas in Melanesia, run entirely by local villages with no direct state involvement
Established in the 1990s through a direct agreement between the local villages of Espiritu Santo island, with no state parks agency involved, it is one of the first examples of a community-managed conservation area in Melanesia. It protects one of the last significant fragments of lowland rainforest in Vanuatu, with guiding and birdwatching programmes led directly by the inhabitants of the surrounding villages, who receive the ecotourism income as an economic alternative to logging the area.
