Rainforest
Warm, wet forest all year round, the richest in species on the planet.
What it means
In the tropical belt, with abundant rain and no winter, forest grows in layers: an unbroken canopy that captures nearly all the light, an understorey in deep shade, and a floor where organic matter is recycled within weeks. That structure multiplies the available niches, which is why a single hectare can hold more tree species than an entire temperate country. Much of that life happens up in the canopy, out of sight of anyone walking below.
