Declared in 1980, Khao Sok is frequently cited as the oldest tropical forest in the world, at an estimated age of more than 160 million years without major climatic interruption, older even than the Amazon rainforest itself. Its artificial Cheow Lan lake, formed by a dam built in the 1980s, has created a landscape of limestone karst islands rising straight out of the water, routinely compared to Vietnam's Ha Long Bay for their geological likeness.
