Declared in 1998 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, the Central Suriname Nature Reserve protects the largest stretch of intact rainforest in the country, one of the territories with the highest proportion of untouched forest cover on the planet — thanks largely to Suriname's historically low population density and to the absence of any large infrastructure or agricultural schemes in its interior.
