Highlight
The highest volcano in north-east Asia, with a crater lake around which legends of a monster are routinely compared to Loch Ness
Protected since 1960 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1980, Changbai Mountain (Baekdu to Korea) is the highest volcano in north-east Asia and forms part of the natural border between China and North Korea, split quite literally by the boundary line that crosses the crater lake at its summit. It is revered both in Chinese tradition and in Korean founding mythology, which places on this mountain the birth of the legendary kingdom of Gojoseon, and popular accounts tell of a supposed lake monster, routinely compared to the legends of Scotland's Loch Ness.
