Highlight

The last great remnant of primary lowland rainforest surviving in Sri Lanka

Made a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988, Sinharaja is the last great remnant of primary lowland rainforest surviving in Sri Lanka, with exceptional endemism: more than 60% of its tree species and a similar proportion of its animals exist nowhere else on the planet, the result of the island's long evolutionary isolation from the Indian subcontinent.
