Sapo National Park

Declared in 1983, Sapo is Liberia's first and largest national park, and it came remarkably well through the two consecutive civil wars that tore the country apart between 1989 and 2003 — though not without illegal gold mining and poaching during the most unstable years. It is now one of the last great remnants of the Upper Guinean forest, one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots on the planet.
