Declared in 1987, Pico Bonito is the largest protected area in the Honduran region of Atlántida and protects a complete ecological gradient running from Caribbean mangroves and coastal plains up to cloud forest on summits above 2,400 metres, producing a range of microclimates that supports an exceptional biodiversity within a relatively compact area near the city of La Ceiba.
