Declared in 1987, it protects the cloud forest of the headwaters that feed Lake Yojoa, the largest natural lake in Honduras and a critical water source for much of the west of the country. Its trails, run largely by local cooperatives, offer waterfalls and lookouts over the lake, and are one of the most accessible places in Honduras to watch the resplendent quetzal.
