An open cenote in which, at around 30 m, a layer of hydrogen sulphide separates the fresh water from the salt and forms a dense cloud. Branches and trunks of fallen trees rise from the bottom through that layer, so that the diver seems to float above a landscape of fog with trees emerging from it.
Depth
15–60 m
Recommended level
Advanced / technical
Average visibility
40 m
The cloud is not some exotic mineral phenomenon but the product of the decomposition of leaves and branches that fall into the cenote. Advanced Open Water is the minimum requirement because of the depth at which the effect lies.
