Home to the world's first tree hotels, raised platforms for watching wildlife from the safety of height
Declared in 1950, Aberdare pioneered a tourism idea later copied across Africa: the tree hotel, an observation lodge raised on stilts beside a waterhole, from which guests can safely watch the animals that come down to drink through the night. It was at one of these lodges, Treetops Hotel, that the then Princess Elizabeth was staying in 1952 when word reached her of the death of her father, King George VI, making her Queen Elizabeth II overnight while she was a guest in the park.
