Cape Evans

At Cape Evans stands the preserved base hut of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, from which he set out on his fateful attempt to be first to reach the South Pole; Scott and his four companions reached the pole in January 1912 only to find that the Norwegian Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by barely 34 days, and all five died on the return journey from exhaustion, hypothermia and lack of supplies. The hut, with its bunks, tinned provisions and original scientific equipment still in place, has been restored and preserved as one of the most complete material records of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration.
