Cape Hallett

Protected since 1966, Cape Hallett held between 1957 and 1973 a research station operated jointly by the United States and New Zealand during the International Geophysical Year and the Cold War years that followed, an early example of bilateral scientific cooperation on a continent where the territorial claims of different countries overlap with no formal resolution. After the station closed and was dismantled in the 1970s, an ambitious programme of ecological restoration was carried out on ground disturbed by decades of human activity, returning the headland to its original Adélie penguin colony.
