Highlight

One of the densest and most diverse seabird colonies on the Antarctic peninsula on a minimal area of ground

Protected since 1993, tiny Avian Island holds one of the densest and most diverse concentrations of breeding seabirds on the whole Antarctic peninsula relative to its very small area, including a significant population of gentoo penguin, whose distribution has gradually shifted south over recent decades as a documented response to the regional warming of the Antarctic peninsula, one of the fastest-warming areas on the planet.
