Highlight
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014; it protects four major river basins of the western Himalaya with barely any permanent settlement
Declared in 1984 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, the Great Himalayan National Park protects the headwaters of four major river basins of the western Himalaya in a virtually untouched state, with very few permanent settlements inside its boundaries — thanks in part to a compensation programme that has voluntarily resettled herding communities outside the park's core in exchange for shared use rights in its buffer zones.
