Managed since 2008 under a partnership between the Zambian government, the organisation African Parks and six local traditional chieftaincies, the Bangweulu Wetlands are one of the few places in the world where the shoebill can be watched in the wild, a bird of almost prehistoric appearance much coveted by international birdwatchers for its rarity and its unusually motionless behaviour. They also hold the black lechwe, a semi-aquatic antelope endemic to this basin.
