Highlight

It holds one of the largest single seabird colonies on the planet, with more than a million pairs of chinstrap penguin on an active volcano

Part of the British nature reserve declared in 2012, Zavodovski Island is an active volcano — Mount Curry, with documented recent eruptions — which nonetheless holds one of the largest single seabird colonies on the planet: more than a million breeding pairs of chinstrap penguin nest directly on its warm volcanic ash slopes, a mass concentration of wildlife on a geologically hostile landscape documented in very few places in the world.
