Extended in 2012 within the South Georgia nature reserve, this protected strip supports the largest Antarctic fur seal population in the world, which had fallen to barely a handful of survivors by 1900 after the intensive commercial sealing of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and today passes four million animals on the island, one of the greatest recoveries of a marine mammal species documented on the planet.
