Designated an ASPA in 2003, the Marion Nunataks are rock peaks emerging from the extensive ice cap of Charcot Island, in one of the least visited and least studied areas on the western edge of the Antarctic peninsula. Their extreme isolation, surrounded by dense sea ice for most of the year, has allowed lichen communities to develop with practically no direct human influence.
