Declared in 1970 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1982, Seoraksan is reckoned the most emblematic massif in South Korea, its exposed granite formations set against foliage that turns an intense red and orange in autumn, making it the country's most photographed hiking destination in that season. It hosts an active programme to reintroduce the Asian black bear, hunted out of virtually the whole Korean peninsula through the 20th century.
