Ardley Island

Designated an ASPA in 2003 and managed jointly by several countries with bases nearby on King George Island — one of the areas with the highest density of international research stations in the whole of Antarctica, with facilities from more than ten countries within a small radius — Ardley Point protects a mixed gentoo and chinstrap penguin colony whose closeness to intensive human activity makes it a permanent case study in the coexistence of scientific research, base logistics and effective wildlife conservation.
