Highlight

Cedar forest and karst system of the central Middle Atlas

Khenifra National Park was created in 2008 in the central Moroccan Middle Atlas and protects some 842 km². It is the most recent of the country's ten national parks.

Its territory is of limestone relief with a highly developed karst, and some of Morocco's most important rivers rise in it. The sources of the Oum Er-Rbia, the country's second river by flow, are a group of springs that emerge at the foot of a cliff and form stepped waterfalls, one of the most visited places in the region. The park also includes karst lakes such as Aguelmame Azigza, set between cedar-covered slopes.

The vegetation combines cedar, holm oak and Portuguese oak woods, with high-altitude grasslands at the upper levels. It is home to Barbary macaque, otter in the watercourses and a montane forest birdlife. The territory is inhabited by Amazigh communities of pastoral tradition, whose sheep and goat flocks make use of the forest and the grasslands, and reconciling that use with the regeneration of the cedar forest is the area's main management challenge.
