Bromo Tengger Semeru

Declared in 1982, it protects the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru volcanic complex, with Mount Semeru as the highest volcano in Java and one of the most active in Indonesia, with eruptions documented almost continuously for decades. The Tengger people, who live on the massif's slopes, hold the Kasada festival each year, casting offerings into the smoking crater of Bromo in a Hindu ritual going back several centuries.
