Declared in 1984, Hell's Gate is one of the few national parks in Africa where visitors can cross the ground on foot or by bicycle among herds of zebra and giraffe with neither a vehicle nor an armed guard, there being no dangerous large predators in the area. Its gorge of volcanic walls was a visual inspiration for the settings of Disney's The Lion King.
