Declared in 1977, Rubondo Island lies out in Lake Victoria and was, between the 1960s and 1970s, the site of the reintroduction of chimpanzees rescued from European circuses and zoos, in one of the first documented large-scale great ape rehabilitation and reintroduction projects in Africa, whose descendants still live on the island in a semi-wild state today.
