Declared in 1982 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, the Wuyishan region is the birthplace of Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe) oolong tea, whose six original mother bushes, over 350 years old, are so strictly protected by the Chinese government that their leaf is no longer harvested commercially: tea made from genetically identical cuttings of those bushes is reserved for gifts of state, and a small historic quantity once sold at auction for the equivalent of several times its weight in gold.
