A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, Mount Emei is one of the Four Sacred Mountains of Chinese Buddhism, and holds on its slopes what is reckoned the first Buddhist temple built on Chinese soil, raised in the 1st century AD, barely decades after Buddhism arrived from India. Its Leshan Giant Buddha, carved into a nearby cliff between the 8th and 9th centuries, is the largest stone-carved Buddha statue in the world.
