Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, Shennongjia is the only Biosphere Reserve in China's central temperate zone, and has for centuries been the centre of local legends about the Yeren, or Chinese Bigfoot, a supposed hairy wild hominid never scientifically confirmed despite numerous search expeditions, some of them mounted by Chinese academic institutions during the 20th century.
