Declared in 1985, Mahale can only be reached by boat across Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world, which keeps it among the least visited wildlife parks in Tanzania despite holding one of the largest wild chimpanzee populations in Africa, studied continuously by Japanese researchers since the 1960s, in parallel with Jane Goodall's work at nearby Gombe.
