Declared in 1955 and part of the extensive Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Site since 1982, Southwest National Park is one of the last three great stretches of genuinely pristine temperate wilderness surviving in the southern hemisphere, alongside parts of South American Patagonia and certain remote regions of New Zealand, with virtually no roads or permanent infrastructure across its vast mountainous interior.
