Highlight

Transboundary temperate forest of the Siberian tiger

Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park lies in the provinces of Jilin and Heilongjiang, in the southern part of the Changbai mountains, and borders Russia and North Korea to the east. It was created to recover the populations of Siberian tiger and Amur leopard in north-eastern China, where both species had been reduced to a few individuals crossing sporadically from the Russian Far East.

The strategy has consisted of restoring the continuity of the temperate forest and of the prey populations — sika deer, roe deer, wild boar —, removing extensive livestock farming from inside the park and deploying a technological surveillance system with thousands of connected cameras that make it possible to follow the movements of the big cats in real time. The park also cooperates with the neighbouring Russian national park, since the tiger and leopard populations are transboundary and neither could sustain itself alone.

The results are cited as one of the system's successes: at least 27 Siberian tigers and 42 Amur leopards live in the park, and since 2017 at least 12 tiger cubs and 11 leopard cubs have been born within its boundaries. The area was launched as a pilot in 2017 and was officially established on 12 October 2021, in the first group of five Chinese national parks.
