Temperate forest

Mid-latitude woodland, with marked seasons and trees that often drop their leaves.

What it means

This is the ecosystem of the beech woods, oak woods and mixed forests of Europe, East Asia and North America, together with the boreal taiga that extends them northwards. Its defining feature is seasonality: a cold winter forces species to migrate, hibernate or change diet, and the cycle of the leaf sets the rhythm of the forest's whole year. These are also the most heavily transformed forests on the planet, so many of their protected areas conserve mature fragments surrounded by farmland.
