Declared in 1969 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 as part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, Barrington Tops preserves one of the last remnants of ancient temperate forest directly descended from the vegetation of the old supercontinent Gondwana, with Antarctic beech (Nothofagus) over 400 years old.
