Declared in 2007, Potatso was the first protected area in China to officially adopt the national park designation and management standards to international criteria, serving as a pilot model for the later Chinese national park system developed through the 2010s. It protects alpine meadows and glacial lakes on the Tibetan plateau of Yunnan, with a notable population of Yunnan snub-nosed monkey, an endangered endemic primate.
