Declared in 1992, Undara protects one of the most extensive lava tube systems in the world, formed entirely by a single volcanic eruption some 190,000 years ago, when fluid lava cooled and solidified on the outside while the inside went on flowing for weeks, leaving behind more than 160 km of underground tunnels, of which only a small fraction has been explored and is open to the public on guided visits.
