The agile wallaby is the most abundant macropod of tropical northern Australia and the only wallaby that also lives in New Guinea. Sandy-coated with a pale cheek stripe and a dark stripe on the forehead, it feeds on grasses and, in the dry season, on roots it digs up. It usually forms groups of ten or more animals around waterholes. It is one of the few kangaroo species to have benefited from livestock farming, as it makes use of cattle pasture and water points.

Fun facts

In the dry season it digs into the sandy beds of rivers to reach groundwater, creating wells that other animals then use.
It is the only wallaby living both in Australia and on the island of New Guinea, separated by the Torres Strait.
