Savanna

Tropical grassy plains with scattered trees, shaped by the dry season.

What it means

The savannah is a mosaic: neither closed forest nor pure grassland, but tall grass dotted with trees that withstand fire and drought. Its year divides into two very different halves, and on that alternation depend the great herbivore migrations, which follow the rain and drag their predators along behind them. It is the ecosystem where a complete community of large mammals, with its predators and its scavengers, is still best preserved.
