Declared in 1996 and extended over an area protected since 1990, Bahuaja-Sonene protects the Pampas del Heath, the largest stretch of tropical wet savannah within the Peruvian Amazon — an ecosystem atypical in the region that holds species usually associated with the Pantanal or the Brazilian Cerrado, such as the maned wolf and the marsh deer, far north of their usual range.
